Iceland Photo Tour — Overview
Photography in Iceland is not about ticking locations.
It’s about being in the right place when everything comes together — light, weather, and moment.
This Iceland photography tour follows a carefully planned route across the country’s most photogenic areas, including waterfalls, glaciers, black sand beaches and remote landscapes.
Each day is adapted to the conditions, adjusting timing and locations to make the most of the light — without rushing.
Designed for photographers looking for a Northern Lights photography tour in Iceland and a complete landscape photography experience, this journey combines flexibility with a structured itinerary.
Small group. Maximum attention. Real experience.
Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrival in Iceland & Transfer to Goðafoss Waterfall
We meet at Keflavík International Airport (or Reykjavík) and start our journey north across Iceland.
This first day of the Iceland photography tour includes a scenic drive through diverse landscapes, with photo stops along the way depending on conditions.
By evening, we arrive at the Goðafoss waterfall, one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland, for our first sunset or twilight photography session.
If conditions allow, we go out again to photograph the Northern Lights, beginning the tour with an aurora session.
Overnight stay: Goðafoss area.
Day 2 — Goðafoss Waterfall to Hvitserkur Sea Stack
We start early with a sunrise photography session at Goðafoss waterfall, capturing the first light over one of the most iconic waterfalls in North Iceland.
Afterwards, we continue exploring the north, moving through remote landscapes of North Iceland on the way toward the coast.
In the afternoon, we reach Hvitserkur, the dramatic sea stack rising from the ocean — one of the most unique photography locations in Iceland.
Sunset at Hvitserkur, working with light, tides, and reflections.
If conditions allow, we head out again later to photograph the Northern Lights.
Overnight stay: Hvitserkur area.
Day 3 — Snæfellsnes Peninsula & Kirkjufell (West Iceland)
We leave North Iceland and begin the drive toward the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often called “Iceland in miniature” for its diverse landscapes.
Along the way, we make selected stops depending on light and weather conditions.
By the afternoon, we reach the Kirkjufell area near Grundarfjörður, one of the most iconic photography locations in Iceland.
We photograph Kirkjufell mountain and its surrounding waterfalls at sunset, focusing on composition, light, and changing conditions.
If the sky is clear, we head out again later to capture the Northern Lights in Iceland.
Overnight stay: Grundarfjörður area.
Day 4 — Snæfellsnes Exploration & Transfer to Brúarfoss (South Iceland)
We begin the day with a sunrise photography session at Kirkjufell, one of the most iconic landscapes in Iceland.
Afterwards, we continue exploring the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland, visiting coastal cliffs, volcanic formations, and remote locations depending on light and weather.
In the afternoon, we drive toward South Iceland, heading to the Brúarfoss area, known for its striking blue waterfalls and river systems.
If conditions allow, we go out again in the evening for a Northern Lights photography session.
Overnight stay: Brúarfoss area.
Day 5 — Gullfoss Waterfall, South Coast Highlights & Sunset at Reynisfjara
After breakfast, we visit the iconic Gullfoss Waterfall, one of the most famous natural landmarks in Iceland and a key highlight of any Iceland photography tour.
We then travel along the South Coast of Iceland, with multiple photo stops at stunning waterfalls such as Skógafoss, as well as other scenic locations along the route.
In the afternoon, we arrive in Vík, a small coastal village known for its dramatic landscapes and proximity to Iceland’s most famous black sand beaches.
Our day concludes with a sunset photography session at Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, capturing basalt columns, sea stacks, and the dynamic movement of the ocean.
If the sky is clear, we head out again for a Northern Lights photography session.
Overnight stay: Vík area.
Day 6 — South Coast Sunrise, Fjadrargljufur Canyon & Vestrahorn at Sunset
We begin the day with a sunrise photography session at Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, capturing the first light on the basalt columns and powerful Atlantic waves.
We then travel east along the South Coast of Iceland, with a stop at the breathtaking Fjadrargljufur Canyon, known for its winding river and moss-covered cliffs.
In the afternoon, we continue toward Höfn, reaching the dramatic Vestrahorn mountain, one of Iceland’s most iconic and photogenic peaks.
Our day concludes with a sunset photography session at Stokksnes, where black sand dunes, reflections, and ocean textures create unique compositions.
If the sky is clear, we head out again for a Northern Lights photography session.
Overnight stay: Höfn area.
Day 7 — Vestrahorn & Stokksnes: Full Day Photography Experience
We start with a sunrise photography session at Vestrahorn, one of the most iconic mountains in Iceland, rising dramatically from the black sand coastline.
Throughout the day, we explore the Stokksnes area, working with dunes, reflections, textures, and constantly changing weather — ideal conditions for creative landscape photography.
This is a dedicated photography day, allowing us to revisit locations and adapt to light, rather than rushing between stops.
At sunset, we return to Vestrahorn for one of the most rewarding moments of the journey, when the landscape transforms under golden light.
If conditions allow, we head out once more for a Northern Lights photography session.
Overnight stay: Höfn area.
Day 8 — Stokksnes Sunrise, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon & Ice Cave Experience
We begin the day with a sunrise photography session at Stokksnes, capturing the dramatic interplay of black sand, reflections, and the iconic peaks of Vestrahorn.
We then continue toward Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Iceland and a highlight of any Iceland photography tour.
Formed by the retreat of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, part of the vast Vatnajökull ice cap, the lagoon is filled with massive drifting icebergs — a constantly evolving scene offering endless photographic possibilities.
Nearby, we explore Diamond Beach, where ice fragments wash ashore on black sand, creating striking contrasts and unique compositions.
In the afternoon, we embark on a guided ice cave experience, entering natural blue ice formations beneath the glacier.
Inside the cave, we photograph abstract patterns, translucent ice, and rare light conditions shaped by the glacier itself — one of the most unique experiences in Iceland.
At sunset, we return to Jökulsárlón to capture the lagoon in soft light.
If the sky is clear, we head out again for a Northern Lights photography session over ice and glacier landscapes.
Overnight stay: Jökulsárlón area.
Day 9 — Diamond Beach, South Coast Waterfalls & Return to Keflavík Area
We start the day with a sunrise photography session at Diamond Beach, one of Iceland’s most striking locations, where ice fragments from Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon wash ashore on black volcanic sand.
As the light rises, the contrast between ice, ocean, and dark sand creates constantly changing photographic opportunities.
We then travel west along the South Coast of Iceland, revisiting some of the most iconic waterfall locations of the country.
Highlights include Seljalandsfoss, where we can shoot from behind the waterfall, the hidden canyon waterfall Gljúfrabúi, the powerful Skógafoss, and the lesser-known Kvernufoss.
In the late afternoon, we reach our final accommodation near Hveragerði, located close to Keflavík Airport, making departure logistics easy and smooth.
Overnight stay: Hveragerði area.
Day 10 — Departure from Keflavík
After breakfast, we transfer back toward Keflavík International Airport, located about one hour from our accommodation.
Depending on flight times, we’ll arrange the drop-off to ensure a smooth departure.
This marks the end of the Iceland photography tour — a journey through some of the most dramatic landscapes in the world, from waterfalls and glaciers to black sand beaches and the Northern Lights.

Feedback from past tour participants
A couple of years back, I came across an image of Santa Maddalena, Val di Funes. Though at that point I had very little knowledge of photography, the striking contrast in the landscape, form and light of this place completely captivated me. And thus began my relentless research. I don’t drive, and it quickly dawned on me that navigating the Dolomites isn’t easy. As I searched through the work of local photographers from the area who shared my passion, I accidentally stumbled upon my biggest find of the last several years — Federico Antonello. A brilliant photographer, a thorough gentleman, well-spoken, empathetic, and yet gritty at the same time.We developed a great bond during the trip and I have never ceased to admire his intricate knowledge of the terrain and light conditions alike. I’d probably someday…

I warmly recommend Federico Antonello for any photo hike in the Dolomites, thanks to his great knowledge of photography conditions in the area, as well as his friendliness and willingness to help with specific requests. I went to the Dolomites in the summer of 2019 with my family, and a few weeks before the trip I asked Federico if he would be available for a few outings together while my family was doing something else. As soon as I contacted him, he started preparing a tailor-made programme based on my availability, my location during the stay, and the type of photos I wanted to take in the area. He also advised me on the gear to bring along and provided very precise information about the conditions for each hike (driving distance from my place, walking time, difficulty of the hike, etc.). I did two hikes with him, and each time he picked me…

Well!! This was my first mountain adventure for both hiking and photography, and I was a bit nervous. However, Fed never made me feel that way during the whole trip. A thorough gentleman and a good human being. He was more of a friend than a tour guide. He was very polite and always answered our questions. He knows the Dolomites inside out and took us to breathtaking spots at the right time of the day. The accommodations were homely and very cosy. He walked with us throughout the hikes and even went back and forth to help other fellow hikers despite of the ascent and descent. Very knowledgeable about photography and camera controls. I would definitely recommend Federico to all my friends, and he will be my guide for all my future photo trips to the Dolomites, Lofoten, Iceland and many more. Thanks Federico and wish…
